Which wheeled excavator should you choose? Tonnage and applications at a glance

This is our range, from compact to heavy-duty:

Wheeled excavator or crawler excavator: what is the difference?

A wheeled excavator runs on tyres: no damage to streets, driveways or existing paving, and quickly and independently movable between sites – ideal on the street, in residential areas or on business parks. Working on loose, marshy or uneven ground? Then a crawler excavator more stability and traction, although transport is usually by low-loader. Is it a smaller, more compact job, for example in a garden or behind a building? Then take a look at our Mini excavators and midi excavators.

Stamps and triple arms: stable working next to a slot

Our tyre excavators are equipped with outriggers: support legs that you lower before you start digging, for extra stability right next to a slot or trench. Thanks to an extra hinge in the arm (triple arm), you can also work over obstacles or closer to a wall or kerb without having to move the machine – useful for sewer work in narrow streets.

Wheeled excavator hire for sewer works and road works

Wheeled excavators are the first choice for sewer works, utility lines and road works: the tyres do not damage the existing paving, the machine moves from trench to trench under its own power, and outriggers provide stability while you work right next to the opening. Need to remove rubble or excavated soil straight away? Then also take a look at our wheeled dumpers.

Accessories for your wheeled excavator

At Molse Bouwmachines you can also hire the following with your wheeled excavator:

  • Digging buckets in various widths, from slot bucket to deep bucket.
  • Breakers For breaking up pavement, concrete or foundations.
  • Tiltrotators, which allows the bucket to rotate and tilt 360° — standard on our 14-tonne models with fixed tiltrotator, optional on other models.
  • Ground drilling for pile foundations.
  • Sorting grabs to sort and move rubble, stones or piping material.

Frequently asked questions about wheeled excavator hire

Which tyre manipulator do I choose for sewer works?

For most sewage works, a 10 to 14-tonne wheeled excavator is sufficient: adequate digging depth and power, and stable enough with outriggers to work safely next to a trench. Are you dealing with larger or deeper pipes? Then you'd best choose the 18-tonne model. If you're unsure, our team will be happy to advise you.

What is the difference between a wheeled excavator and a crawler excavator?

A wheeled excavator runs on tyres, does not damage paving or road surfaces, and moves quickly and independently between sites – ideal in built-up areas or on the street. A crawler excavator has tracks for extra stability and traction on loose, soft or uneven ground, but is usually transported by low-loader. Working on the street or on paving? Choose a wheeled excavator. Working on muddy or rough terrain? Then a crawler excavator is the better choice.

Why does a wheeled excavator have outriggers?

The outriggers give the wheeled excavator extra stability while digging, which is especially important when working right next to a trench or ditch. They are lowered before you start digging and reduce the risk of the machine tipping over or sinking.

Does a wheeled excavator damage the road surface or paving?

No, that is exactly the big advantage of a wheeled excavator over a crawler excavator: the tyres leave no marks or damage on road surfaces, driveways or existing paving, and the machine also drives to the next location under its own power.

How is the wheeled excavator transported to my site?

Wheeled excavators from 6 to 18 tonnes are delivered and collected by Molse Bouwmachines. Request transport with your order and we will schedule it together with the rest of your site.

Do you also hire out wheeled excavators in Geel, Herentals and Turnhout?
